Mermaid: modelling and evaluation research in MIMD architecture design
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Mermaid project focuses on the construction of simulation models for MIMD multi-computers in order to evaluate them and to give estimates of the system’s performance. A multi-layered approach was adopted in which three levels can be distinguished. The application level describes application behaviour in an abstract manner, unrelated to any hardware or architecture specifics. Subsequently, the generation level translates these application descriptions to a hardware dependent trace of operations that drives the simulators. And finally, the architecture level consists of the trace-driven architecture simulation models. Preliminary simulation results show that, despite the high abstraction level at which is simulated, good accuracy can be obtained.

متن کاملThe Mermaid Architecture-workbench for Multicomputers
The large design space of modern computer architectures calls for performance modelling tools to facilitate the evaluation of different alternatives. In this paper, we present an overview of the Mermaid multicomputer simulation environment. This environment allows for the evaluation of a wide range of architectural design tradeoffs while delivering good simulation performance. To achieve this, ...

متن کاملA Heterogeneous Computer Vision Architecture: Implementation Issues
-The prototype of a heterogeneous architecture is currently being built. The architecture is aimed at video-rate computing and is based on a message passing MIMD topology at the top level--transputer based--and on VLSI associative processor arrays (APA, SIMD structure) for low level image processing tasks. The APA structure is implemented through a set of 4 VLSI chips (GLITCH) containing 64 1-b...
متن کاملArchitectural Models and Design Methodologies for General-purpose Highly-parallel Computers
We review the main research issues and problems in the area of general-purpose, massively parallel MIMD computers. It will be shown that the successful exploitation of this class of systems depends on the ability to deene and experiment with design methodol-ogies taking into account several aspects: abstract machine architecture, physical machine architecture, parallelizing and restructuring to...
